fish and chips vs. apple pie

(larger view).

the chart above is a visual representation of where us citizens and british citizens stand on many major issues. it’s interesting to see where these differences lie, and how vast they can be. one in particular that caught my attention was the varying opinions on global warming.

the full article that goes with this chart can be found here.

all of the earth’s water and air compared to the earth’s size.

i would have thought that the amount of water would be larger, but perhaps the real perspective is all the more important.

a little controversy.

ms. magazine’s decision regarding an Israeli ad causes controversy.

ms. magazine, which was the origin of the ms. foundation for women, has been caught up in controversy since january because of their decision to not run an Israeli advertisement that features three prominent women in the Israeli government.

their decision not to run the ad has not only affected funding support to ms. magazine, but also to the ms. foundation, even though the ms. foundation is no longer affiliated with them. this reflects a growing trend among major Jewish donors to pull their support of human rights/social justice organizations that do not show Israeli support in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

i personally feel that it is unfortunate that the decision of these organizations to not show political support for one side or the other or to show support for Palestinians in the struggle is perceived as “anti-Semitic”. additionally, it has cost human rights and social justice organizations thousands of dollars in potential income (as a great percentage of major donors in New York especially are Jewish) to give to peoples of all backgrounds across the world.

showing and telling showing and telling.

this is a really excellent and interesting website that is based on the “do it yourself”/”show and tell” premise of doing and sharing. i’m planning on finding a few nifty things to do off of it.

although, i do already have one checked off from today…

Man punched over urinal etiquette

A New Zealander ended up in court after punching a man over a breach of urinal etiquette.

Edward Aldridge, 47, punched his victim twice after he used the urinal next to him in a pub in Christchurch.

Aldridge accused his victim of looking at him, reports Metro.

Speaking in his defence, counsel Liz Bulger said: “This incident arose from what I understand to be urinal etiquette.

“When the victim spoke to the defendant he was effectively smirking. The defendant was outraged.”

Sentencing Aldridge to 50 hours of community service, Judge Raoul Neave said: “This is exactly the sort of behaviour that makes people afraid to go to town.”

oh, virgin mobile

close up on the copy

from engadget

i can’t find it now, but one of the comments on engadget brought up a good point,
chances are, no one will ever see this ad (it’s virgin mobile canada or something), but as soon as someone makes a big stink of it and sues, it’ll be everywhere. the media will be saying “virgin mobile” every few seconds, having people asking each other if they saw the ad and posting it in their blogs (like this)
